Hi! I’m Dr. Jay Bettergarcia (they/them), a professor and licensed psychologist.
As a queer & trans Latinx professor, I love teaching and training students, therapists, doctors, and professionals about evidence-based, culturally competent, queer and trans-affirming care.
I teach undergraduate and graduate courses, including Multicultural Psychology, Gender & Couples Therapy, Psychology of Gender, Intergroup Dialogues, Helping Relationships, and Abnormal Psychology.
In addition to being a licensed psychologist and professor, I’m also a researcher. My research focuses on queer and trans mental health and wellness, best practice for training professionals to provide affirming care, and trans-affirming practices in therapy.
I also provide Continuing Education trainings for doctors and therapists as part of Tranz Central Coast, including half and full day trainings for Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center, Twin Cities Community Hospital, and San Luis Obispo County Behavioral Health. I have provided CE trainings for psychological associations and regularly present research and skill building workshops at large national and international conferences.
